Snow shovels are one of the tools used by Brent McIntosh in the creation of his large scale abstract paintings. Hence the name coined by gallerist Christopher Cutts - ''Shovel paintings’'. The physicality and kinetic gesture of the moniker is made evident in the dynamic presence of the work. Uncompromising in encompassing their designation - both noun and verb - the ''Shovel paintings'' are slab- like thick impastos of poured acrylic paint wielded and manipulated into expanses of texture and colour. The process of making generates a suggestive array of forms which the artist never allows to coalesce into an insistent representation image. The resultant works display a kinship with Action painting, Colour field painting and ally themselves firmly in the realm of non-objective abstract painting.

The play between colour, light and image offer a sort of optical illusion when combined with both the custom printing and mounting onto individually made framing. As a believer of mind over matter, it is Florian's hope to summon emotional, and often unconscious, reactions to either support the argument or therefor undermine it, that his pieces do in fact have real time movement. For this show Florian will be creating a light projection as part of Hamilton's Supercrawl weekend.
My wooden head forms are in most cases sculpted from 100 year old barn beams, many of them retaining the markings or cutouts from their previous history. I generally do not have a preconceived idea of the end result, I like to work with the character of the wood utilizing chainsaws, Japanese hand saws, chisels and various other mark making tools until an interesting personality emerges.
I often leave the abrasions, gouges and markings which express the physical nature of the process and enhances the shadow and light areas.
The final form is completed using either acrylics, oils or encaustics.
Unique stands are used for each piece for presentation.
